📜 Naranganam Grama Panchayat: History & Heritage

🏛️

Toponymy and Ancient Background

Origin of the Name: Local folklore suggests that the name Naranganam evolved from Narakakkanam or from the belief that it was a place where Narada Ganam (the celestial music of Sage Narada) once echoed. The rituals, traditions, and cultural symbols of Naranganam remain rooted in this ancient heritage.
Early Settlement: Human habitation existed here centuries ago. Formerly under the suzerainty of the King of Pandalam, human settlement reportedly began when this land was granted to two women. The King entrusted the oversight of the region to the Purappattillam and Kottayam Parambil Millam families (where "Millakkar" referred to families designated with revenue governance duties). Most of the paddy fields and properties in this panchayat belonged to the Thekkedathu Illam.

Cultural and Social Transformations

Urallars and Rituals: The Urallars (local rulers/custodians) played a prominent role in performing and sustaining many of the region's traditional ritual arts.
Educational Progress: Feudalism, tenancy, and untouchability were prevalent here, with untouchability practiced in its most severe forms. However, with the establishment of primary schools and the opportunity for children to study together, rays of enlightenment began to enter minds. Over the past century, the village has undergone massive social transformation.

Administrative Milestones

Integration into Travancore: Through the integration of Travancore led by King Marthanda Varma, the Pandalam Kingdom—including Naranganam—became part of Travancore.
Cadastral Survey and Pakuthi: Prior to the Cadastral Survey conducted between 1060 and 1080 M.E. (1885–1905 A.D.) during the reign of King Sree Moolam Thirunal, Naranganam was part of the Kumbazha Pakuthi (village) in Chengannur Taluk under the Quilon (Kollam) Division. At that time, Trivandrum, Kollam, and Kottayam were administered by Division Peishkars. From 1080 M.E., it became part of Cherukole Pakuthi in Pathanamthitta Taluk under Ayiroor Proverthi. The headquarters of Cherukole Pakuthi was located near Madathilpadi in Naranganam.
Formation of Village Union: During the reign of King Sree Chithira Thirunal, under Dewan Sir C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar, the Cherukole Village Union was established with its headquarters at Naranganam North. At the time, voting rights for the Village Union governing committee were restricted to landholders paying at least one rupee in tax or individuals holding a B.A. degree.

Transport Development

Kozhencherry-Mannarakulanji Road: The construction of the Kozhencherry-Mannarakulanji Road was a major landmark that laid the foundation for the panchayat's development. Second only to the Thiruvalla-Kumbazha Road, it serves as a key route connecting Central Travancore to the eastern regions. It remains the shortest route for Sabarimala pilgrims traveling from Chengannur/Thiruvalla. The collective effort of the local population to build this road in a short period stands as a historical achievement.
Beginning of Motor Transit: The first motor vehicle operated in the panchayat in 1922, when Palakunnathu Valiya Thirumeni arrived by car for the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Naranganam Mar Thoma Church. Later in 1955, the 'MKV' bus service on the Pandalam-Kadammanitta route became the region's first public bus service.
